The catalogue of web sites for the HERCULE projects was developed by librarians and teachers during 1999 and further refined during the early months of 2000. Children working with the project have reviewed many of the sites and this is where the rating system has been developed. When the project began, the education curriculum topics of the three partner countries, England, Portugal and Ireland were examined. The areas of education and the environment were identified as common to all and fitting in well with the project profile. It has been decided by the partners to keep the catalogue small and therefore there are only five sites listed for each of the sections. The catalogue will be updated on a regular basis.

When identifying sites, we have tried to find ones that will be of use to the three partners in the project and the wider community. Sites have to be well laid out in a clear, user friendly manner. The sites need to present the information well and by doing so, will encourage a person to re-visit the site or recommend it to others.
