CROMWELL COTTAGE BY MICHAEL YIP

&

JAMES PINNINGTON

Cromwell Cottage, Harden Road, 1996.  The building contains medieval work.  In about 1800 Father James Gordon left money for a Catholic mission, which was used to buy the house and shop in Harden Lane.  The shop was extended as a chapel.  The third priest there was Francis Martyn who came in 1807.  It was further extended to hold 300 in 1808 and dedicated to St Thomas the Apostle.  In 1869 St Peter’s replaced it in the High Street.  The house was used until recently for selling clothes. It was demolished not long ago to build another road for some new houses.
